Reflection on the Class

I selected the blog posts I wrote about because I wanted all of my posts to be easily tied into globalization, the class theme.  Any other posts, such as Austin’s post about muffins from the Eagle’s Nest, I thought were simply a waste of time.  I made the attempt to staying to economics issues because those are the most obvious factors in globalization, but I also included many articles about ethics and environmental issues because I realized that many of these topics are usually not discussed.  Although I went into the class believing that globalization was a good trend and left still believing the same idea, I was able to see both sides of the story by reading articles about ethics and also when we read The Amoral Elephant.
Which answers where my intellectual growth came from this semester.  I believe that being able to see the other side of the story is where I grew from this class.  Although you may not be able to tell from our class discussion, I actually had very different opinions about the globally integrated world then did some of the others in the class, especially those who believed that ethics and the environment were being thrown down the tube due to increased interaction between nations and international corporations.  However, I am now able to see why they believe in their philosophy and even have the ability to sympathize with them.  This will allow me to make better arguments for my beliefs in future classes of all subjects.
Since I do no think my blogs were of amazing quality, I believe that my graded papers were the largest part of my growth in the class.  Thinking about the topics, especially hypothetical questions as in the third and most recent essay, made me really think about how the world would react to policies that I would implement or suggest.  Although I am not the best essay writer in the world, I believe my basic ideas were pretty good and were much better thanks to our class discussions and readings. Unfortunately, from reading the corrections on the first paper, it appears as though my overall message did not get through that well.  Hopefully I was able to fix the status on the rewrite.

World Economic Disparity

The process of globalization has made human society prosper, yet more evidence is shown that this is only benefiting the upper class of mankind, and not the lower class.  An example of this would be the findings from a U.N. survey which measured worldwide consumption of goods.  According to the survey, the richest 1/5 on earth consumed over 86% of all goods, while the poorest fifth only consumes only 1.3%.  In addition, the richest consumed over half of all energy produced and owned almost 90% of all cars on the planet.  The three richest people on earth are worth more then the annual GDPs of over 40 of the poorest nations on earth.  Although I could be wrong, this would appear as though a large gap is forming between two sections: the developed and the developing nations of the world.
